Coffee capsules have taken the world by storm. In France, they are used in almost one out of three households. But they have two major drawbacks: a high cost (between €0.40 and €0.75 per capsule) and a significant environmental impact, despite recycling efforts.
The solution exists and it's simple: the reusable capsule. Filled with your own freshly ground coffee, it allows you to enjoy the convenience of your machine while drinking better coffee.
Here's how to choose wisely.
Why switch to reusable capsules
Quality first. This is the central argument, and by far the most important. A reusable capsule allows you to grind your coffee just before extraction, from fresh, traceable, and selected beans. An industrial capsule, even a high-end one, contains coffee ground several months, or even years, ago, whose volatile aromas have largely dissipated. The difference in the cup is immediate and striking.
Ecology next. Original aluminum capsules, even if recyclable, are rarely sorted correctly and often end up in incineration or landfill. A reusable stainless steel capsule lasts several years, or even a lifetime, with its environmental impact amortized from the first week of use.
Choice finally. With a reusable capsule, you are no longer limited to a catalog of 30 or 40 prefabricated references. You gain access to the entire universe of specialty coffee: origins, terroirs, varieties, roasting profiles. Your machine becomes a true instrument for expressing the bean, rather than a closed system.
How it works
The principle is simple. You finely grind your coffee, fill the capsule, seal it (with an adhesive or screw-on lid depending on the model), and insert it into your machine like a classic capsule. The machine pierces the lid, water passes through at 19 bars of pressure, and the espresso flows out.
The technical challenge is to faithfully reproduce the flow resistance of an original capsule. This is what makes all the difference between a good and a bad model.
Criteria for choosing well
The material
Prioritize food-grade stainless steel (ideally surgical grade 304 or 316). More durable, more stable at heat, with no risk of releasing undesirable compounds. Plastic capsules are cheaper but wear out in a few months and can deform with heat (Coffeegeek.co, 2026).
The type of lid
Adhesive lid (foil). These are small thin aluminum stickers that are affixed to the capsule before each use. They offer the best extraction pressure and therefore the best crema. Disadvantage: they are single-use (but recyclable) and need to be repurchased regularly.
Screw-on or clip-on lid (stainless steel). Infinitely reusable, more ecological and more economical in the long run. Disadvantage: the crema is generally less thick because the sealing pressure is lower.
The filter
The size of the perforations at the bottom matters a lot. A filter that is too coarse lets the grounds pass into the cup. A filter that is too fine blocks the extraction. The best models use a mesh between 150 and 200 microns (Espresso and Machines, 2025).
Compatibility
This is the classic trap. Almost all reusable capsules are compatible with the Nespresso Original range. For the Vertuo range, it's more complex: its centrifugation system makes the design more delicate. It is imperative to check compatibility with your machine before buying.

The market benchmark. Food-grade stainless steel capsule, thin aluminum adhesive lids. The good compromise: Bluecup (around €30-40 per pack)
Serious Belgian brand, quality stainless steel capsules, supplied with a complete kit (capsules, lids, tamper, sealer). Slightly more precise and durable than SealPod, with European customer service. Particularly popular with demanding enthusiasts in France and Belgium.
No lid replacement: WayCap Basic (around €35-45)
Screw-on stainless steel capsule, with a removable filter (and several mesh sizes available depending on your preferences). No adhesive lids to repurchase, so more economical in the long term and more ecological. Crema is a little less pronounced than with a foil capsule, but excellent aromatic fidelity. This model is particularly suitable for those who prioritize durability.
High-end: CAPMESSO Stainless Steel (around €40-50)
Fully stainless steel capsule, with screw-on stainless steel lid and food-grade silicone seals. Solid construction, neat finishes, wide compatibility (Nespresso, De'Longhi, Breville). Cleaning brush and measuring spoon included. Recommended choice for those who want a durable, premium product with no consumables to replace.
What about Nespresso Vertuo machines?
To be honest: the experience is less refined. The Vertuo system reads a barcode on each capsule to adjust its extraction (volume, duration). Reusable Vertuo capsules must reproduce this barcode with a supplied sticker.
The reference model is CAPMESSO Vertuo (around €35-45), in stainless steel, with barcode stickers for each format (espresso, lungo, mug, alto). Results are decent, but without reaching the quality of a reusable Original capsule.
If you have the choice, an Original machine will always be better suited for the reusable capsule experience.
Making good coffee with a reusable capsule
The grind. This is the key parameter. Aim for a fine grind, like powdered sugar, but not powdered. Too fine, the water won't pass. Too coarse, the extraction is weak and the espresso watery.
The quantity. Fill the capsule about three-quarters full, which is 5 to 6g of coffee. Tamp very lightly, without excessive pressure. The reusable capsule accepts a little less coffee than an original capsule; this is normal.
Freshness. Grind just before extraction. This is what makes all the difference compared to an industrial capsule. The volatile aromas of coffee degrade within 15 to 30 minutes after grinding.
The bean. Opt for a fresh, medium-roasted specialty Arabica. This is where quality coffee truly shines.
Cleaning. Rinse the capsule with hot water after each use. Once a month, disassemble it and brush the filter. This is essential to preserve aromas and prevent clogging.
Known limitations
Let's be precise. A reusable capsule produces a coffee with a slightly lighter body than an original capsule (approximately 0.5 g less coffee per dose). The crema is also a little less thick, except with adhesive lids.
These differences are compensated for, and largely so, by the quality of the fresh beans you put in it. A freshly ground specialty Arabica in a SealPod or a Bluecup produces an espresso far superior to any industrial capsule, even high-end ones.
